Yin and Yang in food

A traditional perspective on food
What changes when we look at a meal through the idea of balance? The book’s diagram places foods on a Yin–Yang scale within the macrobiotic perspective presented by the author.
Yin and Yang are traditional concepts. “Expansive”, “contractive” and a food’s position on this map do not measure its nutritional value or replace medical or nutritional assessment. The diagram alone cannot tell an individual what to eat.

An example that opens the conversation
Rice appears close to the centre of the diagram. This does not mean that a rice-only diet is appropriate. Variety, allergies, health conditions and individual needs remain important questions for the appropriate professionals.
